The Civil War in Cobb County

Come to the Marietta Museum of History to hear Michael K. Shaffer share insight on some of the county’s more prominent Civil War actions. Including the formation of Camp McDonald in Big Shanty, the Great Locomotive Chase, the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, the development of the Chattahoochee River Line and the burning of Marietta prior to Sherman launching his March to the Sea in November 1864.

Michael K. Shaffer is the Assistant Director and Lecturer for the Civil War Center at Kennesaw State University. He is a Civil War historian, author, and newspaper columnist, who authored Washington County, Virginia in the Civil War, which published in February 2012. Michael remains a member of the Society of Civil War Historians and the Georgia Association of Historians, serves as a board member with the Civil War Round Table of Cobb County and the River Line Historic Area, and assists the Friends of Camp McDonald as a Civil War consultant. He holds BA and MA degrees in Military History – Civil War Studies from the American Military University, and has delivered numerous lectures on various aspects of the Civil War.
